Ford was taken to a hospital, according to KNX-AM, NBC and TMZ.com.
The FAA confirmed the plane crashed at about 2:25 p.m. after taking off from the Santa Monica Airport. It came down at the Penmar Golf Course in the Venice section of Los Angeles, just past the runway of the small airport.
Fire officials say the pilot, about age 70, was taken to a local hospital with injuries. He was conscious alert and described as being in fair to moderate condition. He was the only one aboard the plane, Ryan P-22, which has two open cockpits. They cited privacy rules for not identifying him.
NBC4-TV says an unidentified relative indicated Ford received cuts but otherwise appeared to be okay. "He's fine. He has a few gashes," the station quoted him as saying.
Aerial images showed a single-wing, open-cockpit plane painted to resemble a U.S. Army Air Corps trainer from before World War II. It has a single fuselage with yellow wings and tail. The grass behind the plane is deeply rutted, indicating the plane skidded before coming to a stop. Fire officials say it hit a tree along the way.
Harrison Ford has been a licensed pilot since at least 2002, FAA records show. His most recent license, certified in May, rates him as private pilot qualified to flight single engine, multi-engine and instrument airplanes, and helicopters.
